Hotel Grande Bretagne

Sunday 26 December 2010

The oldest and most renown hotel in Athens with the best view in Syntagma (Constitution) square.
Those suites on the last floor have amazing view to the Parliament and the Acropolis

The Harp

Friday 24 December 2010

A pedestrians bridge, inspired by the ancient Greek musical instrument, the Harp. It was a gift to Athens  from Santiago Calatrava, for the 2004 Olympic games.

22.12.10

Total mess.....

Wednesday 22 December 2010

This is exactly what I mean by Athens daily photo! Strikes, strikes and strikes have done Athens a city that you cannot simply live in. Roads closed, traffic jams, drivers on the verge of crazy, people trying to reach their destination without public transportation.
Oh, yes, I forgot, it's Christmas!!

21.12.10

Bicycle

Tuesday 21 December 2010

This is a picture you don't see everyday in Athens. But day by day more and more bicycle riders get on the roads of Athens. It's not the easiest town for bicycles. In fact you're more of a target when you're on your bike! And there are no bicycle roads too, maybe it's the only big city in the world that doesn't care for bicycles.
But I ride my bicycle in every occasion! And soon I'll use it for my everyday transfer to my work...

20.12.10

Chariots and horse...

Monday 20 December 2010

Somewhere in the late 70's it was a must for blocks of flats to have a distinctive pattern on the walls. This one is inspired from ancient Greece....

18.12.10

Ghost...

Saturday 18 December 2010

This was supposed to be a public swimming pool. But people in this neighborhood, didn't want it, because they said it would be too much noise!! And they stopped it. Unfortunately, this is Greece in 2010...

16.12.10

Rain...

Thursday 16 December 2010

Bad day, bad photo.
It's been raining almost all day today and I just got this photo from my balcony since I stayed at home today...

14.12.10

13.12.10

Closed...

Monday 13 December 2010

We're having a difficult week ahead. Public transportation not working, civil servants, employees and workers on strike, journalists too. Whole Greece is on strike this week.... (again)

12.12.10

Doorknob

Sunday 12 December 2010

Sometimes you can find very beautiful details in Athens. This is an old door, refurbished, with a nice doorknob, instead of a door bell.

11.12.10

Snow

Saturday 11 December 2010

Finally, winter is here. It may be a light snow, but we woke up today and there was snow all over the Northern suburbs. And it's freezing cold, temperature is just above 0 degrees! And what a difference from two days ago, when we had 20 degrees...

10.12.10

Golden Hall

Friday 10 December 2010

We may be in the middle of a huge economic crisis, the IMF is in fact our government, but at least, we do have the best shopping Mall in Europe! And I'm not saying this by myself, it was voted the best all over Europe. Now, who's shopping, that's another question....

9.12.10

Athens

Thursday 9 December 2010

The weather service says that tomorrow we'll have a bad weather, with cold and snow even in Athens. But today is one of these days that you can't stay at home. So, I went to my local tennis club, walked a bit on the mountain above it and got a photo of Athens, with the Spyros Louis (Olympic) stadium in the middle....

7.12.10

Christmas tree

Tuesday 7 December 2010

Christmas is approaching and there are many that haven't got a Christmas tree yet. You can see a lot of "open exhibitions" like this in the streets of Athens these days...

6.12.10

The Academy and Goddess Athena

Monday 6 December 2010

The Academy of Athens is a part of the so-called "Neoclassical Trilogy" of Athens. It was built between 1859 - 1885 by the Danish architect Theophile Hansen. Later, in 1861 another famous architect, Ziller, took over. The building's emblem is the statue of Athena on a high Ionic column.

5.12.10

Under the Acropolis...

Sunday 5 December 2010

The Tower of  the Winds in Plaka, under the Acropolis Rock. It was built in the 2nd century BC as a weather vane and a water clock and had a hydraulic mechanism. It's external frieze depicts the faces of the eight winds.

4.12.10

The city that never sleeps...

Saturday 4 December 2010

Coming home last night, very late from a night out with some friends. This is how the streets in Athens look even at 2.30 in the morning. Traffic, cars going in every direction and people that don't seem affected by the economic crisis.

3.12.10

Public transport....

Friday 3 December 2010

This is tram, the newest public transportation in Athens. It came back in our lives in 2004, for the Athens Olympic games. It takes you from the centre of Athens to the coastal suburbs of the town, it's fun, but only if you have time to spend, because it's too slow......

2.12.10

Dust in the wind....

Thursday 2 December 2010

While in Northern Europe and parts of the U.S. they have winter and lots of snow, here, in Greece, we have dust! But not just any dust, we have good, imported dust from Africa and the Sahara desert! African dust is carried to Greece by air currents and is more common in the spring. But due to all these weather changes over the globe is present almost every time of the year. This is how Athens looked from my office this morning.....

1.12.10

Time...

Wednesday 1 December 2010

My first theme day!
There aren't many public clocks in Athens and most of them don't work at all! Some of tthe clocks are in churches, like this one in Aghia Kyriaki church at Athinas str. And most of all it's working, although it,s five minutes slow....

30.11.10

Air traffic control tower

Tuesday 30 November 2010

I had to go to the airport today to say Goodbye to a friend who was leaving for London. And I took the opportunity to take a photo of the air traffic control tower, overlooking the two runways at Athens International Airport...

29.11.10

Austrian Alps....

Monday 29 November 2010

This is something you could see in the Alps, or on a mountain with a lot of snow. But here in Athens looks and is so different. But so beautiful in the same time!
Unfortunately, I don't see any snow coming. It's the end of November and although in the rest of Europe there is winter and snow, in Greece, temperature is well over 20 degrees and no sign of bad weather for the near future....

28.11.10

Looking high.....

Sunday 28 November 2010

Athens is a city that doesn't have many high buildings. There must be less than ten all together. This one is probably the smallest of these "skyscrapers". But I'd like to go to the last floor and see the vies from there!

27.11.10

Chinatown....

Saturday 27 November 2010

In Athens we don't have a Chinatown as there are in other big cities. But we do have a lot of Chinese who open stores in every neighborhood. I came across a Chinese corner downtown today and I liked the banners and this yellow building....

26.11.10

Abandoned....

  Friday 26 November 2010

This is how we let old and beautiful houses become ruins! This was an amazing neoclassical building, with a great terrace and great details at Monastiraki square. It's been left like this for years. What a pity!

25.11.10

One city, one team...

Thursday 25 November 2010

The city is Athens and the team is PANATHINAIKOS F.C.
This was taken after midnight, when the game against Barcelona for the Champions League was over. Unfortunately, we lost 0-3!

This is the Olympic stadium of Athens, know as "Spyros Louis", home of Panathinaikos F.C., which was built in 1982. It was renovated at 2004 for the Athens Olympic games from Spanish famous architect, Santiago Calatrava and hosts about 70.000 people. And it was all crowded today....

P.S. The photo was taken at 00.30, so it counts for Thursday, although the game was on Wednesday!

24.11.10

Athens Hilton

Wednesday 24 November 2010

This Athens Hilton first opened in 1963 and it was a miracle of  modern architecture at that time in the city. From the Galaxy bar and restaurant on the last floor, you have the best view of Acropolis. Especially at night, when the lights of Acropolis are turned on the sight is really amazing!
In front of the hotel at the park there is the glass statue of Dromeas (runner) made by the famous Greek sculptor, Kostas Varotsos, in 1988

23.11.10

Parking in Athens....

Tuesday 23 November 2010

This is a typical photo of a sidewalk in Athens. Cars and bikes parked everywhere, preventing pedestrians from an easy walk. Since the owners know they'll never get a parking ticket, they park their vehicles wherever they like. Total anarchy.....

22.11.10

Starbucks Athens

Monday 22 November 2010

A Starbucks Coffee at Mesogion Avenue at night.I just loved that orange - brown curtain from the leaves, in front of the store. This is my favorite one in Athens, and I relax there with a nice cup of coffee, when I have time to spent....

21.11.10

Graffiti...

Sunday 21 November 2010

Most of the graffiti in the city are without any sense, just colored letters that don't mean anything. But this one, next to a metro station is really outstanding. It's Louis de Funes from the Fantomas trilogy.

20.11.10

Deli...

Saturday 20 November 2010

This is the best place in downtown Athens, if you want to buy salami, pastrami, sausages, rare types of cheese or even garlic!.
It's been operated by the same family (Armenian) since 1922!

P.S. Click on photo to see it in larger size with better details!

18.11.10

Old and new...

Thursday 18 November 2010

Sometimes, they keep the old, beautiful, neoclassical houses and build modern buildings on top of them. Here, they kept the old one as the entrance and the main building with the offices is the new one. It is used as a bank, in a central Athens Avenue....

17.11.10

Another block of flats?

Wednesday 17 November 2010

As I often say, I find Athens an ugly city. It used to have charming houses, neoclassical, with beautiful gardens, but after the sixties, one after the other are becoming huge and almost identical blocks of flats.
I'm afraid, this is the story here as well....

16.11.10

Athens Metro

Tuesday 16 November 2010

It may not be as old and famous as the London Underground or the Paris Metro, but it's new, fast, useful and very-very clean! It started in January 2000, after so many problems with excavations, due to antiquities found under the ground. The Metro tunnels were constructed at a depth of 15 meters, a level which is much lower than usual. There are 31 stations and new lines are designed for the coming years.

15.11.10

Best view....

Monday 15 November 2010

Lycabettus Hill. The best place in Athens to have diner with a view. The city doesn't look so beautiful, it's rather ugly when you see it from up there, with all these blocks of flats and the absence of parks and green, but it's got some wonderful "corners" and a magical vibe....
